Alice Walker's diverse and unforgettable characters come vividly to life on stage in this musical, blending dance with blues, gospel, jazz, swing, rural roots and African music. This production stars Tony-winning singer and actress Jennifer Holliday, whilst the upcoming Broadway production will be led by Jennifer Hudson in her stage debut.
What is The Colour Purple About?
Life in the 1930s American South is hard, especially for Celie - a young African-American girl from a poor background. She lives with her abusive father until, at the tender age of just fourteen, she is married off to a man to be his wife, servant and tend to any needs he might have. The Colour Purple is a tender coming-of-age story that follows Celie as she discovers the power or love and of her own strength through friendships forged with several remarkable women.
