The Reviews Are In For The Sound of Music
The new touring production of the musical classic will become your favourite thing!
A perennial favourite since its Broadway debut in 1959 and a cultural phenomenon that has touched the hearts of millions, thanks to the quintessential 1965 movie, The Sound of Music was always going to be a season highlight. The difficulty, however, is in revitalising without revising too heavily, presenting something fresh but not unrecognisable.
Helmed by multi-Tony-winning director Jack O'Brien, this new national tour began performances in Washington in September 2025, and it appears to have found that balance, spotlighting some incredible talent and offering stunning visuals to help breathe new life into the classic.
Aside from glowing reviews of all the above elements, many critics also praised the show for its timeliness, with the Von Trapps' attitude offering a leading light in the darkness of today.
Don't just take our word for it; see what the critics had to say below:
Timeless Sound of Music' on tour at Kennedy Center climbs every mountain...The cast is full of life, and the spectacular singing is full of feeling...The singing was also spectacular across the board, always full of feeling and emotion while still being able to project and articulate. The Sound of Music is a cherished musical that remains timeless in its themes and iconic in its songs, and is here in DC on national tour to enchant a new generation. This story serves as a beautiful reminder to find joy and camaraderie in hard times, and to stick with what you believe, no matter the cost.

(Cayliegh) Capaldi's talent is on full display during Do-Re-Me.' She makes teaching the von Trapp 7 how to sing look effortless. The results are astounding, as after just one short lesson, the children sound like they completed a doctorate in vocal performance....There's not many things everyone can agree on, 'The Sound of Music' is one of them...One song after another is a well-liked tune that brings joy.
