Born in Nashville but raised in Detroit, Kim Owens AKA Kem overcame the cycles of homelessness and addiction to write, release and finance his 2003 debut album Kemistry by waiting tables, performing in a wedding band and maxing out his credit card. The gamble paid off and Kem was snatched up by Motown, the prestigious label that later backed the release of his smash hit single and urban adult contemporary chart topper 'I Can't Stop Loving You' in 2005.
