LIVING LEGENDS, STILLS AND COLLINS

The performance at the Tangelwood Music Center was memorable to say the least. Stephen Stills and Judy Collins gave us a night to remember. They seemed so happy to be there, the air was filled with the energy of the 60's and of times gone bye. Made us remember how our own lives had been marked by that music and what it stood for. Many thanks for the memories.

I am not a music critic, just an old tine fan of CSN. Some of the critics were right but my expectations were met. I never got the chance to see either one live before so this was special. Glad they played some old stuff from each career and band. Loved it. WhY would anyone walk?

GOOD TIME

Stills is a great composer, guitarist and soulful singer; Judy Collins is a great musician in fine voice. They delivered a good show, performing mostly songs from their CD, "Everybody Knows". They weren't studio perfect, and I wasn't expecting that. I hoped to hear "Southern Cross" from Stills and "Two Sides Now" from Collins--and heartily enjoyed hearing both--as did our audience, who didn't need any prodding from the stage to join in on :Long May You Run" and "For What It's Worth", The Lynn Auditorium acoustics were great; stadium seating visibility very good. Their backup band enhanced and underscored the vocals. I'm thinking if you're after a good time and want to see and hear two living legends sing the songs they wrote and/or made great, you shouldn't miss this tour. If you insist on absolute perfection, stay home with your playlists/CDs.

Opener Kenny White was really good and entertaining. Venue was awesome. Weather was perfect. Judy and Steven were good but so historically significant that it was just fun to be with them. They obviously love what they do. They are not 25 anymore, but still brought plenty of passion. Thank you!

DID WE SEE THE SAME SHOW?

We enjoyed Stephen Stills immensely. I thought Judy was having an off night, but what do I know. Judy's version of Maria is so appropriate given what is happening in our country this week. And Stills did a KILLER job on "For what it's worth" was amazing. The Ryman is my favorite venue.

COLLINS YES, STILLS NO

Excellent opening act. Collins was in great voice, singing beautifully. Stills sounded like he had marbles in his mouth. He also rambled on incoherently in his stories. I’m a big fan of his, but if this is the best he can do, he needs to retire. Collins not only sounded amazing, but looked great as well. Show was very rough around the edges, but I’m still glad I was there, if only to marvel at Judy Collins defying time.

A BIT ROUGH AROUND THE EDGES AND MORE

It was an interesting concert, and not necessarily in a good way. Our seats were in the Shed, section 6. The site lines were challenging, but we learned to live with it. I wasn't a huge fan of Judy Collins, but she was magnificent and in fine voice for a 79 year old. I've always been a fan of Stephen Stills, but he has seen better days (haven't we all, I guess). They seemed more than a bit out of sync initially, arrangements were weird, and their voices don't really compliment each other - hers sparkling and clear, his quite rough. She's obviously taken good care of herself over the years, Stephen not so much. He seemed hobbled physically, but his guitar playing was OK, under the circumstances. It was abundantly clear that they hadn't rehearsed very much, as the timing between Stills, Collins, and the rest of the band was way off at times. Quite disappointed at the truncated version of "Judy Blue Eyes" for their encore - a terrible way to end the concert. Oh well.

COLLINS STEALS THE SHOW

Judy was...well Judy. She can still sing and play. Her vocals carried the group through the entire set. Stephen was NOT good...at all. His timing was poor and his play sloppy. I'm really hoping he was feeling under the weather. Otherwise, Stills has lost his mojo...

STILLS COLLINS SHOW

We sat in the first row of the riser section, maybe 21 B. Great view with no blockage. Opener Kenny Whites was great with the a udience! Worth a listen For Sure. Stills I have been a fan of since the Springfield days and we were somewhat disappointed. His guitar work is not up to his level. His voice was very hard to understand and his timing was not good. The band sounded unpracticed and unrehersed. It seemed kind of last minute, like they had never played with Stills. Or Stills couldn't keep up. Or age, something that affects us all. Judy was just Exactly what I expected and only hoped for; Elegant , beautiful and that voice so sweet and high ! We would like to see Miss Collins again but we'd like to see her alone.

STILLS SOUNDING GARBLED

For all those folks complaining that Stills sounded garbled. He did, because he had a stroke. Would you be willing to go back on tour if you had a stroke and knew you didn't 'sound right'? It takes guts to get back in the saddle after something like that. And know that the audience is expecting you to sound just like the record. Get real folks, these guys are old, just like us, and they ain't gonna sound like the 40+ year old recordings. Just be thankful they still go out and do their thing.

I went in with high expectations and was largely disappointed. Stills hasn't weathered well, but even when he hit the old sound, his voice doesn't go with Collins' voice. He may have been better paired with a different singer. His stories were rambling and hard to understand. He didn't even seem physically comfortable on stage except during the big guitar solo. Collins was great. I would have preferred hearing an evening of her singing her songbook mixed with new things like the a cappella number about immigration. The opening act, Kenny White, was excellent. These are world class musicians. While their history together is a compelling jumping off point, they have to understand that this pairing doesn't work as entertainment.

Rambling somewhat incoherent stories, al ost like they were high.. Stills’ voice is gone, guitar just ok. Collins voice good and clear on a few of her solos was only highlight. . Their harmonies were not very good together. Song selection decent but some clunkers. Some arrangements were less than enjoyable. Overall a disappointment

NOT GREAT

We went to see Judy Collins at the Kravis Center in WPB, Fl. The beginning “act” was not pleasant at all. He lasted about 30 minute, then came Judy and Stills. Stills voice is haggard at best. He did her no justice as a duet. I was hoping to hear at least some of her era music I.e. Send in the Clowns. That never happened. For her age she has a wonderful voice, but lost some tone at times. I watched people leave en masses, even before she ended. I too left early. God bless her for keeping it up, but everyone loses it at some time. Really disappointed.

VERIZON THEATER IN GRAND PRAIRIE

This was a rambling account of their past exploits which we could hardly hear as Stills mumbled through his memories. It is time to go. Collins voice had its moments but cracked and was flat a few times. Very disappointing and embarrassing for them.

DISAPPOINTED!

Yes ... two legends in concert ... but Stills no longer "has it" and brought down the entire performance. Judy is still amazing, but she really needs to rethink this partnership. I left the theatre feeling sorry for a once-great performer who just doesn't know when his time is up. I'd go and see Judy solo any day!

I 've been a livelong fan of both, and have been to Tanglewood often as it's close to home. In short: this was the worst show I've ever seen there! With good seats in the shed, we had to endure terrible harmonies, and Stills' often unintelligible ramblings. The keyboard player overpowered Stills' singing, which may have been by design, as his voiced sounded awful. Judy's voice was wonderful, even though her enthusiasm seemed quite low. And their chemistry seemed very forced. Throughout the 1 1/2 hr show, we watched a steady stream of patrons leave early.

Do yourself a favor. Stay home, clean house, give the dog a bath, anything. This was absolutely the worst concert I have ever seen in my life. Everything was wrong.

Stephen Stills performance was sad. His singing voice was weak and lacked range and bravado. His conversations were rambling and boring. Judy Collins can still sing but their duo pieces seemed to lack anyone singing melody. It was as though they were both singing the harmony part. They managed to even mess up “Southern Cross”- a beautiful melodious piece. Many in the audience left early as the performance was not worth sacrificing bedtime or delaying an after show repast. The Dreyfus Hall venue was excellent as was the preschool dessert buffet. We enjoyed a ProShop dinner at The Regional restaurant.

REFUND

Unfortunately, I cannot give this show zero stars. This was an incredible disappointment from two great musicians that are now a little too far “over the hill.” Collins voice was strong, but she had no real audience presence with her stories. Stills was incoherent most of the time, and when you could hear his voice he was very off key. If you’re a fan of long, drawn out, out of tune, guitar jams, this concert will not disappoint you, and this will be done with a different guitar each time since Stills changed guitars about 10 times in two hours.

Huge disappointment. Stills and Collins each have wonderful musical skills; unfortunately, their combined voices yielded a discordant and out-of-synch performance that sounded like Neil Young, with a cold, wearing tight underwear. This was a terrible performance- displeasing at best- offensive at worst. We walked out (4 of us) at the midpoint. The price of the ever-beating sun was far too great to bear for the less-than meager offering. They should each sing - but ALONE

WHAT A DISAPPOINTMENT!

Our high anticipation of seeing these two music icons came to an abrupt thud with the opening number. A lethargic rendition of The Travelling Wilburys ‘ Handle Me With Care. The tempo really didn’t improve much. Band seemed out of synch, almost like this was the first gig out of rehearsal. Bass seemed to lag behind rhythm..It could have been a sound system thing. Vocal harmonization between Stills and Collins didn’t work! There were a couple of standout solo numbers by Judy Collins but not enough to salvage the afternoon. This will be my last “nostalgia” concert. Prefer to keep my memories intact.

LOW BAR SET FOR TANGLEWOOD PEFORMANCE BAR NOT MET

The opening act was very good and professional. That cannot be said for Stills and Collins. Collins forgot to put her capo on her guitar on the 2nd song of the act. They had to stop and re-start "In The Morning" . We can forgive that, but not the horrible vocals, the clear lack of rehearsal and the tired stories of meeting 50 years ago. The tickets were 100 dollars in the shed at Tanglewood. We left after 4 songs, disappointed and feeling as though we got ripped off. The bar was set VERY low for this performance. These are two fairly elderly performers, But to go on stage and play in such a fashion is not acceptable. Songs that we might recognize were horribly re-orchestrated" to such a degree that we really had to dig deep to find any semblance of the original. Stills garbled when he spoke and was even worse when he sang. Collins' vocals were acceptable , but did not blend with stills. A very sad way to end two great careers. The bar was not met, but they "jumped the shark".
