The Marian Anderson Awards first began in 1998; created to celebrate individuals who use their talent for personal artistic expression and whose work has contributed to the society. The Marian Anderson Award is named in memory of the legendary singer and honored Philadelphian who played a vital role in the acceptance of African-American musicians in the classical music world and culture. Her grace and voice remain a great legacy.
Each year honorees are selected by the Award's board of directors from candidates who have shown remarkable careers of artistic achievement and critical acclaim.
