Venture into space with the Philadelphia Symphony Orchestra as they perform a special evening, a mixed program of space-themed and space-inspired music. It's like a planetarium without the craned necks! Including a world premiere work by of Nolan Williams, Jr, his piece "Hold Fast to Dreams", was composed in tribute to the first African-American astronaut Col. Guion Bluford. With spoken word, choral song and soloists from all over the city, this is a must-see for everybody with a fascination with the worlds above our planet!
The music to be performed includes Richard Strauss' "Dawn," from Also sprach Zarathustra; Haydn's "The Heavens Are Telling," from The Creation", John Williams' Adventures on Earth," from E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, Dvorak's"Song to the Moon," from Rusalka, Puccini's "E lucevan le stelle," from Tosca, Bernstein's "Balcony Scene," from West Side Story and Holst's"Jupiter, the Bringer of Jollity," from The Planets (with video).
The Philadelphia Orchestra and The Mann Festival Choir will be conducted by Cristian Macelaru, featuring soprano Elena Perroni, mezzo-soprano Leah Hawkins, tenor Marco Cammarota, bass-baritone Frank Mitchell and narration by Derrick Pitts.
