We all know the story of it's A Wonderful Life. Frank Capra's classic movie, starring Jimmy Stewart, has been an essential part of the Yuletide entertainment calendar for decades, but Walnut Street Theatre have a slightly different version to warm your spirits. This production takes the form of an old-timey radio play, with a handful of actors in 1940's garb taking you through the story from behind some vintage microphones. A wonderful display of storytelling dexterity, it's simple, imaginative and wholly enthralling.
A clever spin on A Christmas Carol, It's a Wonderful centers on George Bailey, an idealistic banker whose luck takes a turn for the worse. Distraught, George considers taking his own life on Christmas Eve, only to be stopped in his tracks by an angel called Clarence, who magically transports George back through time, and shows him how the people he loves would be much worse off if he had never existed.
