Tim Minchin's Tony and Olivier Award winning smash hit musical about an extraordinary girl with extraordinary powers
From the mind of mad musical genius Tim Minchin comes the five-time Tony and seven-time Olivier Award winning production of Matilda The Musical, a magical adventure based on Roald Dahl's beloved children's classic. The musical premiered on the West End and Broadway almost a decade ago to much critical acclaim, spawning multiple international tours. The popular family-friendly show is still running in London's Theatre District to this day!
Matilda's score received a 2014 Grammy Award nomination for Best Musical Theater Album, solidifying Australian musical comedian Tim Minchin's status as a force to be reckoned with in the theater world (his second transatlantic musical smash was 2017's Groundhog Day). Filled with anarchic joy, gleeful nastiness and heartfelt moments, the deliciously twisted take on David and Goliath comes to Philadelphia's Walnut Street Theater as part of their brand new 2018/19 season.
This is an extraordinary story about an extraordinary girl named Matilda, a pint-sized heroine with pluck. Ignored and abused by her parents, she finds refuge in books, using her imagination to escape. Her strong imagination turns into incredible powers that she must learn to use against the tyrannical reign of headmistress Miss Trunchbull, a villainous cretin who inspires fear and loathing in all of Matilda's fellow students at Crunchem Hall. With much bravery, the strange little girl stands up to the no-good adults in this glorious coming of age tale.
