Guiseppi Verdi's epic Simon Boccanegra graces Opera Philadelphia in September. From pirate to the venerated Doge of Genoa, Simon Boccanegra's life is a melting point of political intrigue, rebellion and murderous plot, and that doesn't even cover his personal relationships. Examining the effect of hot-headed decisions we make in our youth, and how, over time they can come to define us...
Taking place over 25 years, Simon's path to political success begins with his election as Doge, on the day he discovers his beloved Maria, the mother of his daughter, who has vanished, has died at the cruel treatment of her father Jacobo Fiesco. But that is only the beginning of a sprawling tale that sees him reunited with his daughter, but in his happiness, past decisions catch up with him.
