Why see Opera Philadelphia - Let Em Eat Cake?
Gershwin Hidden Gem
George and Ira Gershwin's sequel to their Pulitzer Prize-winning musical Of Thee I Sing runs with the Philadelphia Opera, under the direction of Zack Winokur. A hidden gem in the Gershwins' back catalog, the musical has rarely been performed since it premiered on Broadway in 1933. A searingly fun political satire with a book by George Kaufman and Morrie Ryskind and a score that, despite lesser known, is among the pair's best, don't miss the chance to see this brilliantly underrated work!
What is the Story?
Written in 1933, Let Em Eat Cake is George and Ira Gershwins' satirical farce set in a dystopian version of the United States. President Wintergreen has lost the election to John P. Tweedledee by a clear landslide. But he refuses to take the will of the people lying down. With his former vice-president, Wintergreen plans to overthrow the government, getting his second term by any means possible.
