Gregory Spears' modernist take on Sleeping Beauty
The timeless fairytale Sleeping Beauty has been performed by ballets, operas and theater troupes the world over, but you'll likely have never seen a performance like this. Sleepers Awake is a contemporary, modernist reimagining of the tale by composer Gregory Spears, inspired by the work of Swiss writer Robert Walser.
In Sleepers Awake, the chorus itself takes center stage, crafting an ethereal, unsettling but overwhelmingly beautiful sonic landscape, with shifting dynamics creating the feeling that the chorus is drifting in and out of sleep. A dreamy retelling of Sleeping Beauty like no other.
