Noises Off

Noises Off at Walnut Street Theatre

Why see Noises Off?

The much-loved comedy farce arrives in Philadelphia

With the US premiere of British smash hit, The Play That Goes Wrong hitting Broadway this year, the Walnut Street Theatre is bringing another comedy farce show to its stage, that is guaranteed to hit your funny bone! From a disastrous dress rehearsal where the cast fumble their entrances and exits, to bothersome props and a final performance of missed cues and forgotten lines, Noises Off is a side-splitting piece of comedy theatre that explores the explosive personal relationships which lead to off-stage shenanigans - and on-stage bedlam! If you've ever seen amateur dramatics in action, this will definitely speak to you....

Noises Off first premiered in 1982 at the Lyric Hammersmith in London, UK. After receiving strong reviews, it transferred to the Savoy Theatre in the West End, where it ran until 1987, winning both an Evening Standard Theatre Award and an Olivier Award (The British equivalent of the Tony), before opening on Broadway in 1983 at the Brooks Atkinson Theatre. 2016 saw Michael Frayn's much-loved comedy revived by Roundabout Theatre Company, starring Tony-winner Andrea Martin (Pippin, Young Frankenstein), Rob McClure and Meghan Hilty.

Noises Off

We saw the show Sunday and enjoyed it even more than the production we saw in New York. The cast really seemed to work well together. What a wonderful farce! The first act is the set up for the comedy and slapstick of the second act and people were screaming with laughter. We'll be getting season tickets for next year! Our seats were fine. I would definitely take my mother! Probably not kids. Lots of good restaurants within walking distance of the Walnut Street Theater. ... Read more

Great cast, very funny

I thought the Walnut Street Theatre production of "Noises Off" was excellent! The opening night crowd was lighter than usual because of the weather, but those who were there really seemed to enjoy it. The set was beautiful, and it rotated 180 degrees between each act, which was impressive. The timing of the cast, particularly in the second act, was amazing, and Ben Dibble, Alanna Smith and Greg Wood were particularly good. The show is not appropriate for younger children due to language and mature themes. The show is a play within a play, and some of the comedy probably means more to someone with theatre experience. In short, excellent cast, great production, and lots of laughs. ... Read more

Funny show with great actors

We are in town from the New Orleans area for a long weekend and truly enjoyed our experience at the Walnut. We go to both our large theatre in the city as well as smaller theatres in the area. We find while the acting is good at the smaller venues, it’s not to the level of The Saenger. Not the case here! These actors were fantastic! The show is laugh out loud funny, much of it slap stick humor. Don’t go in expecting a Sound of Music family feel good show. It’s not appropriate for young kids. My 16 year old son loved it (imagine that!) and so did my wife and I. If you are a product of the 80s, imagine Caddyshack or the original Vacation on stage. If the kids can handle the sex humor in those, they are fine at this show. I highly recommend this show if you are looking for a fun outing. ... Read more
