Opera Philadelphia - Carmen

Opera Philadelphia - Carmen at Academy of Music

Why see Opera Philadelphia - Carmen?

A brand-new version of Bizet's compelling opera

A brand-new production of Carmen will be winging its way to the Opera Philadelphia stage. Georges Bizet's seductive heroine has attracted audiences with her exotic magneticism for some 150-odd years. Conducted by Yves Abel and directed by Paul Curran, the role of the Spanish gypsy will be sung by rising star mezzo-soprano Daniela Mack, described as "a rich, agile voice and a fearless attitude", with the role of Evan LeRoy Johnson as Don Jose. Carmen has carved a niche as one of opera's most dangerous women. Stunningly beautiful and wholly aware, her habit of taking and breaking hearts can only lead to trouble for her and her bedazzled targets.

Carmen is a provocative Gyspy woman, whose short temper brings her to the attention of the kind and charismatic Don Jose, who falls head over heels in love with her. An intense tale of love found and ruthlessly taken, Carmen is an intense and passionate piece, as lust and revenge go hand in hand making for a fiery finale.

Standouts were Don Jose’s limpid tenor voice, Carmen’s sexy sultry voice, body, and movements, and the crisp yet lush beauty of the itchy. ... Read more
