Celebrate Philadelphia's Vibrant Jazz Culture
The Philly Pops celebrates the vibrant musical heritage of its native city with this special three-night program featuring world renowned Jazz Orchestra of Philadelphia bandleader and trumpeter Terell Stafford. Together they'll be performing music from the likes of local heroes John Coltrane, Dizzie Gillespie, the Heath Brothers, Stanley Clarke and Billie Holiday.
The city rapidly developed a buzzing jazz scene thanks to an influx of African Americans from the South after World War 2, future luminaries Coltrane and Gillespie amongst them. Venues like Standard and the Dunbar, as well as most of the clubs along Columbia Avenue in the north of Philly, provided the perfect home for the burgeoning scene, which was instrumental in the development of the virtuosic bebop jazz style. Don't miss this chance to hear the history of The City Of Brotherly Love recreated note for glorious note!
